Pirate Games & Fun Stuff

  • Scavenger Hunt - Break the kids up into groups of two and have them hunt for treasures on a list that you prepared for them The first team to find all their items wins a big prize - give a consolation prize to all the other players so no one feels left out

  • Treasure Hunt - This one is so much fun but takes a bit more effort to set up.  You will need to think up about 10 clues - each clue will lead the players to the next clue  The kids can all work together as  a team for this one - try to make your clues tricky so that they really have to think to figure it out.  Have the final clue lead to a treasure box filled with dollar store goodies for the guests to split up

  • Treasure Hunt For Younger Kids - Have the kids dig in the sand for some buried treasure. Just bury some fun dollar store items in your sandbox , provide some shovels & pails and let them dig away

  • Walk The Plank You will need a 5' plank of wood, fifteen 3" x 3" squares of paper, tap, a pirate hat, 3 squares of cardboard and a marker.  Before the party, label the cardboard squares 1 , 2 & 3 Place the pieces in the pirate hat.  Place the plank of wood on the floor - draw footprints on the 15 paper squares.  Tape the squares on the plank from end to end to make a path.  Have the children sit in a circle around the plank and the birthday child stands at the beginning of the plank.  Once child from the circle pulls a number from the hat and asks the birthday child to walk that number of steps down the plank.  Then the number drawn in put back into the hat and its passed to the next child in the circle.  The round continues until everyone in the circle has picked a number.  If the birthday child is still on the plank , he or she has survived and wins a prize ( after the birthday child has gone let the other children have their turns )

  • Pin The Patch On The Pirate ~ Play this like pin the tail on the donkey but instead pin the eye patch on the pirate, or you could do pin the peg leg on the pirate, or pin the hat on the pirate, or pin the parrot on the pirate

  • Treasure Toss ~ Before the party decorate a cardboard box to look like a wooden chest, or use a real chest if you have one. Leave the top off or open. Make or purchase five bean bags. This is a simple bean bag toss game where the children will take turns tossing the bean bags into the box from a pre-determined location. Variations - For older children make Draw a map on a large box. Cut three large holes in the map/box and the children will attempt to get the bean bags into the holes. Just like a bean bags toss game at a carnival.

  • Ticktock Find The Croc ~ Hide an egg timer inside of ( or beside ) a stuffed crocodile. Have the 'pirates' try to locate the hidden croc by its tic before the egg timer goes off.

  • Musical Islands ~ Play this like musical chairs but instead use hula hoops and call them ' musical islands '

Pirate Printables

Pirate Invitations

  • Make a parchment paper map ( use the instructions for making parchment paper but make the paper using a map - that you have either made up on the computer, by hand or even a real map would be great ).  Then write out the party information ( use a nice thick tipped pen ) ( You could have something like ' Come To ARR Party - We Dare Yee ! ')  Roll up each invite and tie it with a piece of old looking string then maybe add a little wooden craft skull & crossbones ( you can get these at the craft store ).
  • Make each invitations a 'message in a bottle', grab some dollar store bottles ( or use old / clean soda bottles ) and roll up your party invitation inside ( just use a plain piece of paper and tea stain it ).  Then add a few tiny sea shells and maybe even some sand inside to make it even more creative ! ( These kind obviously should be hand delivered - or you could just throw them in the ocean and hope they get there ;)

Pirate Party Decoration

Pirate parties are a lot of fun to have - and just as fun to get ready for.  With the release of The Pirates of The Caribbean series of films here are so many great pirate themed items available in your local party stores that you can really go all out ! Here are a few ideas to get you started :

Treasure Map Table Cover ~ Use a large map or several maps all taped together for a table cloth ( You can tea stain it if you want an old effect )  Mark each guests place with an ' X ' or draw a hidden treasure route.

Chest of Cold Drinks ~ Serve cans of soft drinks in a plastic-lined, ice filled cooler.  Decorate the outside of it with construction paper to look like a wooden treasure chest.

Color Scheme ~ Generally I would suggest a black and red color scheme for a pirate party

Fish Net ~ Hang up a fish net ( can be found at party supply stores ) and fill it with nautical items like seashells, old bottles, maybe even an old boot !

Dress Up ~ This is one of the really fun parts of a party for kids - you can act like a kid too ! Get into the spirit of things and dress yourself & the kids like pirates

Pirate Party Cakes & Food

  • Buried Cheese Burger ~ Cook the cheese inside the meat for a buried cheese burger

  • Gold Potato Coins ~ Cut up the potatoes in coin shapes, bake them in a single layer on a baking sheet with a bit of olive oil, sea salt ( and add whatever other seasoning you like - paprika is good ) then sprinkle them with cheese for added ' Yum '  Serve them in a treasure box if you have one

  • Pirate Pinwheels ~ Spread a thin layer of cream cheese on tortillas , add some lunch meat and/or cheese.  Roll them up and secure with toothpicks.  Let them sit for at least one hour then cut into 1" slices before serving garnish with 'masts' made by gluing some paper triangles to toothpicks !

  • Peanut Butter Planks ~ Cut celery into 6" pieces and fill with peanut butter , then top with raisons ( tell the kids they are lined up to walk the plank )

  • Pirate Punch ~ In a large bowl mix a can of pineapple juice, a can of orange juice concentrate, a can of lemonade and five cups of cold water with one quart of 7-up and one quart of rainbow sherbet. Chill until ready to serve ( you can float some cherries in the bowl for added effect - maybe add some little toothpick flags to make it even better )

  • Order Pizza , or better yet let the kids get involved and have them make their own pizzas - provide lots of toppings to choose from and be prepared for a mess and a lot of laughs !

Pirate Graphics & Clipart

Pirate Crafts

Select one craft that best suits your child's interest and age group.

  • Pirate Flags ~ Let the kids each make a pirate flag. Give them a piece of craft foam ( pre-cut them into large triangles ) and have the kids decorate them with some glitter glue, gems, craft foam shapes, letters etc.  Attach the flags to wooden dowels or for smaller flags use craft stick

Pirate Party Favors

Children always look forward to getting a little goody bag at the end of a party.  The possiblities are endless and it really depends on your budget.  Check out your local dollar store for some cute items ( gummy fish, temporary tatoos, chocolate coins, candy jewelry etc )  Put them into a piratethemed gift bag - or make your own ( I would make a treasure box for each guest to put the favors in)
